One hemisphere bakes under perpetual sunlight where temperatures reach 300°C and the planetary crust gives way to churning magma, while the other is locked in frozen darkness where bioluminescent crystal-plants glow eerily in the void. All Twi'lek civilization clings to the narrow habitable twilight band along the terminator line, where the collision of extreme temperature zones generates winds of 500 km/h that sculpt the landscape into dramatic mesas, spires, and canyon systems. Within the mountain ridges pushed up by tectonic activity along this boundary, the Twi'leks carved their underground cities—protected by thick blast doors against heat storms and the lethal creatures that prowl beyond the walls.
By 1 ABY, Ryloth groans under one of the Empire's most oppressive occupation regimes. Grand Moff Ravik commands an Imperial garrison thousands strong from a fortress on the planet's surface, backed by stormtroopers, AT-DP walkers, and orbital capital ships. The planet is designated crucial to the Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic ryll spice. Imperial-controlled mining operations feed both licensed pharmaceutical channels and, through corrupt officials, the black market, while a doonium refinery processes strategic minerals for Imperial military construction. Senator Orn Free Taa—a universally despised collaborator—rubber-stamps decrees that keep spice production flowing and the slave trade running. Opposing this regime is Cham Syndulla's Free Ryloth Movement, a battle-hardened guerrilla force operating from hidden cave bases, maintaining weapons caches, informant networks, and salvaged Clone Wars-era military hardware including Vulture droids and blurrg cavalry.
Twi'lek culture is defined by clan, caste, and the sacred kalikori—family heirlooms shaped like the species' twin lekku that record lineage across centuries. The lekku themselves contain part of the Twi'lek brain and enable a silent sign language invisible to outsiders. Ryloth's fauna is as hostile as its climate: lyleks are massive insectoids with spiked carapaces tough enough to deflect blaster bolts, hunting in hordes of hundreds led by gigantic queens; gutkurrs are two-meter-tall pack hunters with reptilian and insectoid characteristics; and the equatorial forests that separate the hemispheres humbled even Sith Lords who crash-landed within them. The Death Wind Corridor—threading through the Cloak of the Sith nebula—serves as the primary smuggling lane for ryll spice, making Ryloth a magnet for smugglers, bounty hunters, and fringers willing to risk an Imperial blockade for the right price.
The capital city of Ryloth, built on a massive rocky plateau connected to the surrounding terrain by a single plasma bridge—a chokepoint the Empire controls absolutely. The Imperial governor rules from the old Twi'lek council hall with a Star Destroyer in permanent orbit overhead. Inside, Imperial administrative towers of prefab durasteel stand beside ancient Twi'lek architecture carved from the living rock. The Octagon, a multi-level plaza district, houses cantinas, slave markets, and vice establishments, while its lowest level—The Hole—is one of the vilest sectors on the planet.
A mid-sized settlement built into the canyon walls of the twilight band, serving as a secondary hub for offworld trade and ryll processing. The Empire maintains a garrison of forty stormtroopers and a customs checkpoint at the small spaceport, but lacks the surveillance infrastructure of the capital. Market stalls line the lower levels selling dried fungus, woven fabrics, and smuggled goods hidden under legitimate produce. The Empire controls the front gate but can't see what happens in the back alleys.
A vast network of natural caves and mining tunnels extending deep beneath the twilight zone where most of Ryloth's wealth is extracted. Imperial mining droids and Twi'lek labor crews work in rotating shifts under Mining Guild overseers. Deeper in, past the active extraction zones, old tunnels branch into unmapped caverns where the Free Ryloth Movement caches weapons, hides fugitives, and plans operations. A Twi'lek woman named Oola'ra runs a supply depot at the edge of the mapped tunnels, the contact Marra named in her dead drop.
The oldest Twi'lek settlement on Ryloth, predating the Republic. Its deepest levels have been continuously inhabited for thousands of years, carved into the rock by hand long before industrial mining arrived. The upper levels are administered by the Empire, but the undercity—a labyrinth of ancient corridors, sealed clan vaults, and ceremonial chambers—remains effectively ungoverned. Twi'lek elders maintain old traditions here: clan law, the heat dances, the oral histories. Offworlders are tolerated in the market levels but rarely welcomed deeper.
A frontier settlement on the edge of the Bright Lands where ryll veins run shallow and the heat makes Imperial patrols short and miserable. The garrison sends a patrol once a week and otherwise leaves it alone. The residents are miners, outcasts, and Free Ryloth operatives who use the heat shimmer and sensor interference to mask supply runs. The closest thing to a free settlement on Ryloth, surviving precisely because the Empire doesn't consider it worth the attention.

A pre-Republic archaeological site buried deep in Ryloth's frozen dark hemisphere, accessible only after days of overland travel through ice-ravine mazes, Lylek-infested cave systems, and predator-stalked plateaus. The ruins take the form of an enormous sinkhole—hundreds of meters across—with smooth, hand-carved walls descending in concentric rings of doorways and spiraling patterns toward an unseen bottom. Stone markers at the rim bear angular symbols in an unknown language that matches nothing in Twi'lek clan records, and the stone itself appears to resist the surrounding cold. Faint, unidentifiable energy readings emanate from below—not mechanical, not electrical. The interior chambers are ancient and stripped bare, their original purpose lost to time. The Free Ryloth Movement sent two expeditions to retrieve an artifact believed to be of use to the rebel cause; neither returned. What—or who—now inhabits the ruins remains unclear.
